What is Permanent Eyeliner?
Microblading is performed using a handheld tool fitted with ultra-fine needles. During the procedure, each individual hair stroke is gently etched into the upper layers of the skin, depositing pigment along the way. The result is a series of precise, realistic-looking hair strokes that blend seamlessly with your existing brows, or build a completely new shape where little to no brow hair exists.
The entire process typically takes about two hours and is completed in two sessions:
Session 1 – Initial Application Your artist maps your ideal brow shape based on your facial structure, then applies an organic numbing cream for comfort before carefully etching each stroke. Pigment is matched to your natural or desired brow color.
Session 2 – Perfecting Touch-Up (4-8 Weeks Later) After your brows heal, a perfecting touch-up refines the shape, fills any areas where pigment didn’t fully retain, and locks in your final result.
What to Expect - Before, During & After
Before Your Appointment
Remove contact lenses before your appointment and avoid wearing them for 24 hours after. Do not use lash serums, retinol, or blood thinners in the days prior. Avoid caffeine on the day of your appointment. Full preparation details are available on our Before Your Appointment page.
During Your Appointment
Your artist begins with a consultation to map the liner placement and confirm your desired style. A topical numbing cream is applied for comfort before application begins. Permanent eyeliner is one of the more sensitive areas of the face, but numbing ensures a manageable experience for most clients.
Immediately After
Eyes will appear more defined and may feel slightly tender or swollen immediately after, this is completely normal. Some clients experience minor swelling around the eye area for the first 24–48 hours.
The Healing Process
- Days 1-3: Liner appears bolder and eyes may feel slightly sensitive
- Days 3-5: Light flaking as the skin heals
- Days 5-10: Color softens and settles to the true healed result
- Week 4-8: Retouch appointment to refine and lock in the final look
Full aftercare instructions are available on our Aftercare page.
Frequently Asked Questions About Permanent Eyeliner
What is permanent eyeliner?
Permanent eyeliner is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing procedure that deposits pigment along the lash line to create lasting definition. It eliminates the need for daily eyeliner application and holds up through sweat, water, and sleep. Results typically last 2-4 years.
What is the difference between permanent eyeliner and lash enhancement?
Permanent eyeliner creates a visible, defined line along the lash line. Lash enhancement places fine pigment dots between the individual lashes at the root, creating the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes without any visible liner. Lash enhancement is the more subtle of the two techniques.
Does permanent eyeliner hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure. The eye area is sensitive, but most clients find the experience manageable with numbing. Some temporary swelling or tenderness in the 24-48 hours after is normal.
How long does permanent eyeliner last?
Permanent eyeliner typically lasts 2-4 years depending on skin type, sun exposure, and skincare routine. Regular retouch appointments help maintain crisp definition and color over time.
Can I wear contacts after permanent eyeliner?
Contact lenses should be removed before your appointment and avoided for at least 24 hours after. Your artist will provide specific guidance based on your procedure and healing progress.
Who is a good candidate for permanent eyeliner?
Permanent eyeliner is ideal for anyone who wears eyeliner daily, struggles with smudging or fading, has difficulty with application, or wants defined eyes without daily makeup. It is also popular among active clients who want makeup that holds up through physical activity and outdoor life.

How Long Does Permanent Eyeliner Last?
Permanent eyeliner typically lasts 2–4 years depending on skin type, sun exposure, skincare routine, and aftercare. Clients who use active skincare ingredients like retinol near the eye area may experience faster fading. Regular retouch appointments maintain the crispness and color of the liner over time.
To extend results, apply SPF around the eye area daily and avoid oil-based makeup removers directly on the liner area.
